Notes from Beth Waits - I have photos of many of these stones if anyone is interested in them. A number of the stones are recent replacements, and I have found some serious discrepancies with census data, especially with older dates and with dates where the years only are given.

IERCE History in Rankin Co., MS
Source:
A History of Rankin County MS Vol. 1, Rankin Co. Hist. Soc. Inc. 1984. Printed by Stephens Printing, Florence, MS 39073
The following is directly quoted from this book, pp 243-244. Comments and corrections are in italics.
PIERCE, THOMAS, STEEN. BUTLER
The Pierce family and the Thomas family came to Rankin County, Mississippi, in a covered wagon. On their way they stopped for rest and lunch. After a while the adults called the children from their games to resume the journey. Little Rena Thomas had disappeared. There was no trace of blood, which would have been evident if she had been killed by wild animals. Therefore, after a two-month search, it was decided that she must have been kidnapped by Indians, for she was never seen again.
Traveling in this wagon train were two brothers, Redwine Pierce (1805-1885) and Wiley Pierce (1812-1892). Wiley married Sarah Enochs Steen in Rankin County in 1844 and they had three children, Mary, Elizabeth, and Silas [B.W. Note: There were actually five children: Mary (b. ca 1844), Elizabeth (b. ca 1846), Silas (1849-1916), Huston (1859-1880) and James Bradford (1861-1905).] Redwine married Mary Polly Thomas around 1838, and they had six sons, Wiley (1839-1874/1880), Thomas (1841-1883), William Dean (1845-1904), Sherwood (1847-1869), George (1849-____), and Silas (1849-1916).[B.W. Note: These are the dates for Wiley’s son Silas. This Silas was 1857-1933.]
Redwine’s son, William Dean, enlisted in Peyton’s Battalion of the Confederate States Cavalry, commanded by Captain D.G. Cooper, on January 15, 1864, at the age of nineteen. He served until the end of the war and surrendered in Jackson in June, 1865. After the war William married Sue Elizabeth Steen on November 8, 1868. Sue Steen’s parents were Silas Lusk Steen and Margaret Ann Butler of Rankin County. Sue and William had five children, Adra (1877-1899), Henry Cole (1879-1962), Effie (1883-1918), Hugh Victor (1884-1948), and Stella (1886-1973). [B.W. Note: A 6th, and oldest, child, Silas W. L. born Oct 1869 was in the 1870 census with age 9/12. He was not found in the 1880 or later censuses.]
Sue Elizabeth Steen Pierce, like so many of our Southern pioneer women, spent all of her life in Fannin, Mississippi, devoting her time and energies to the care and well-being of her family. She died on August 24, 1931, at the age of eighty-three and is buried in the Sinai Cemetery in Rankin County, Mississippi.
